the country I discovered that that was what you called a political meeting - a speakin'. This was quite different from the Baltimore better elements. This was regular Democratic organization.

We went through the streets. We were driven, at seven A.M., all through, up and down the streets, not straight to the Mead's house, but up and down the streets with the band in another car. How they managed, I don't know, but the band went ahead in an automobile and played as they drove in the automobile. That attracted attention. People looked out the windows, waved their hands at us. Little boys ran out. There was great excitement. We went around the town. We went by the hall where we were to speak. There was a big sign out in front of this brick building with steps in front of it, “DEMOCRATIC SPEAKIN' AT 7:30 TONIGHT.” Our names were on it as the speakers.

We finally got to Mr. Randolph Mead's house. There, instead of going to our rooms and taking a bath, fixing our hair and getting ready for the day, we found that there was a party of about thirty people who had been invited to have breakfast with us. That was all right. The Mayor was included, as was the Chairman of Democratic Committee, a lot of other people such as well-wishers, friends, Democratic committee people. There was great cordiality. This is the technique of the South.
