the human race. I think they are in the pattern of the Democratic party's thinking and of the kind of people that make up the Democratic party. I think to that extent Al Smith was right when he said, “This is the way the Democratic party will drift. This is the way it will go in modern times.” It has.
Anyhow that was Al Smith's advice to me. I never have forgotten it. That's why I can always say that anybody can always count on me to vote the Democratic ticket. I expect to say my say about who they nominate and what they have in their platform. I, being the type of person I am, have had plenty to say. I've been consulted, or I've at least been listened to when I pressed myself forward in my group. In the long run, I think there has been steady progress.
I think the Republican party now, by virtue of just catching up with the times, has been obliged to at least accept many of the great basic social reforms which were invented and projected and performed by the Democratic party.
Before the convention of 1920 I had enrolled in the Democratic party. I had money in my pocket. I had some people out in San Francisco that I wanted to see. I was anxious to do a little promoting. I was just interested. I wanted to promote the idea of social legislation a la
