New York State. The Governor had told me that this was the drift that the Democratic party would take. I hoped it was so. I knew that Newton D. Baker was all for us. After all, he was the President of the Consumers' League. He was our kind of a party. The Woodrow Wilsons were fully aware of the existence of the Consumers' League and of labor legislation. Margaret Wilson was a worker in the field. Uncle Henry Morgenthau, who was then quite a figure in politics, was a large contributor to the Consumers' League.
Young Henry Morgenthau had worked for me on the Committee on Safety. He was just out of school. I think it was a volunteer job, but if he got paid it was next to nothing. It was to give him some experience in getting around. He stayed with us for two or three months as a summer job. He was all right. I was teaching him. His father asked me to show him how life was lived. “He doesn't know anything about the factories and slums of New York and he ought to know something about it,” was Uncle Henry Morgenthau's comment. “I want him to know about it. I want him to know how things are.” Young Henry Morgenthau had chosen agriculture as his field of intellectual activity at college.
