life was his business, or should be his business preoccupation. Uncle Henry and his wife were by way of being considerable philanthropists. He had had a very interesting theory that wherever they had a real estate development they should also build up social opportunities in that area. He had settlements and forums and things all up in that part of the Bronx which the Morgenthaus developed and made into a very great and wealthy area. It's that area just back of the Grand Concourse. So he wanted Henry to know what the life of New York City was like.

Uncle Henry Morgenthau had been really magnificent. He was a very considerable real estate figure. He had served on the Committee on Safety bravely when a large part of the other real estate operating interests were trying to suppress the Committee on Safety, trying to suppress this report, trying to suppress the Factory Investigating Commission report, and trying to work against the passage of this factory legislation which made them spend lots of money on their old New York left buildings. Uncle Henry Morgenthau had bravely resisted that. It's an awful hard thing to resist - the pressure of your colleagues, the people you do business with, the people who are in the same business with you. You don't like to do something that's going to hurt them. You don't want them to do something that's going to hurt you
