who had supposedly a lot of independent citizens in it. What we were supposed to do was to get them encouraged and enthusiastic about arranging a really good meeting for the Governor and a really good turnout for the Governor and for the candidate, and to allay their own unspoken doubts, if they had any. The woman's meeting was not a Democratic meeting. There were a lot of independent voters in that.

I don't remember too much about those meetings in St. Louis. They were preparatory. Anyhow we were there on the day when the Governor came. This is one of the things that I remember so plainly, because, of course, Senator Hawes and the whole committee were totally occupied with this reception of the Governor. Since I was there speaking for the Democratic National Committee I got in on everything that was planned, including a good place to see the procession. I'm not sure that I didn't ride in one of the cars in the Governor's procession. Anyhow I did have a good place on the reviewing stand, because I saw the crowds everywhere, not just in one part of the city.

The thing that was so extraordinary was the quality of his reception. The crowd was simply enormous. I don't know what the papers show as the size of the crowd that came out. In those days, before radio was so common, you couldn't work up a crowd and get a crowd all to go to a certain
