I went down to Springfield and dealt with the Illinois Workmen's Compensation Board.

Mrs. Catherine Edson was still alive then in California. One of my objectives in going was to study their system of minimum wage law administration. They had a new minimum wage law for women. Mrs. Edson was the head of it. I wanted to study that.

I had a number of things to do, but I also wanted to see the convention. I wanted to see what was what. It's very hard to remember conventions. The Chicago convention of 1940 at which Henry Wallace was named for Vice President probably stands out in my mind more clearly than any other convention I ever went to. The reason I remember it is that I had an important part to play and very significant things were committed to my care. I had to do them alone. That's very deeply impressed upon my memory.

In 1920 I just went as a spectator. I remember having a hard time getting a ticket to go in. I sought out the Tammany delegation who said, “Oh sure we'll get you in.” It was that kind of a thing. I discovered at the 1920 convention how little the Democratic party of New York State counted. They counted a good deal, but those who were in charge of the convention were not New York State Tammany Democrats. They were not the faces I had been accustomed to
