All bedlam broke loose when he said they ought to know better than to misjudge a man and be opposed to him on account of his religion, and so forth and so on. They really began to be awfully wild. They began to shout, hoot up and scream. The eggs began to come, as well as the tomatoes. I'll never forget the picture of a tomato smack on that starched shirt - a red dripping thing - with Harry Hawes going right on with his speech, tomato and all. It was really wonderful.
