because it was prohibition and they wouldn't serve drinks in a public place like that. At any rate, we had been asked to go down and wanted a bite anyhow so we went. We brushed off our dresses with a little cold water and cleaned up our shoes. We didn't look too disheveled. However, Harry's shirtfront was all red still. He had no way of getting rid of that. We had mostly gotten rid of the signs of valor, but we had been through it.

As we came down, with Irene Gibson with us, we were recognized as the three Democratic ladies from New York. As we came into the grill, the orchestra struck up “Dixie” and then “The Sidewalks of New York” in honor of us. The bandleader and the people at the tables rose. They made little speeches. It was wonderful really. It was partly good will. It also gave us an opportunity to make little Democratic speeches right there to a captive audience who hadn't come to hear a political speech. It was great good luck.

That was a very amusing and educative experience in this area.

Nellie Don was around all the time in the time we were in Missouri because she was giving a lot of money to this campaign. She was very much interested in taking a big part in it. She had certainly a good deal of influence in many places. She turned up later in New York and she made
