the most of her acquaintanceship with Democratic women which she had established by her acquaintance with those who came campaigning, first, and second, by her very handsome contributions, not only to the state committee in Missouri, but to the National Democratic Committee. When she turned up, she had to be paid attention to and we all paid attention to her. After election we paid attention to her. She had been, after all, awfully nice to us and given us every courtesy when we were there. We naturally had her to dinner to the club and things like that.

I can't remember the names of the towns we went to after we left Kansas City. I think Kansas City was about as far West as I went. We went to places not far from Kansas City. We went to Omaha and we went to some other places in Missouri. We went to Jefferson City and to two or three other smallish places, like Joplin. We had the experience of speaking from an automobile in the streets at the noon hour.

I never had anything like Independence anywhere else. I've often been told that there was danger of that. In Maryland Senator Cabell Bruce thought there was danger of it. In one or two of these places in the South somebody would think there was danger of it. It didn't actually occur except in Independence, however. Apparently threats
