The same organization that we had used in the campaign to support Smith for New York State elections - that is, the Citizens Committees, the Independent Business Men for Smith, the Independent Lawyers for Smith, the Non-Partisan Social Workers for Smith, and that kind of organization - which had been invented by Mrs. Moskowitz, I believe, and used so successfully in the gubernatorial elections was going on and on.

The women in New York State worked very hard. There was a great deal of intensive campaigning all over the state by the New York women as they began to be afraid that they might not carry New York, which we had taken for granted originally. It became apparent to those who knew New York well that there was some doubt about our carrying the state. I don't think that it ever penetrated into Smith's mind. You have no idea what the excitements of a campaign are. You cease being astute if you are the candidate or if you are among those so close to the candidate that your personal life is committed, and your economic life may be. You rise or fall with him. The closer people are to a candidate, the less astute observations they make. For instance, George Van Namee, who was usually a very cold-blooded proposition, completely lost his perspective and he was sure that the Governor would be elected. There were a great many people who were. The closer they were the more sure they were.
