together. Roosevelt was supposed to strengthen the ticket in New York, but also the fact that Al was running for President was going to strengthen Roosevelt for Governor. People felt that they would supplement each other beautifully on the ticket. That was what everybody thought was going to happen.

I remember seeing Smith at least twice during those last two or three days, perhaps the day before even. I know Mrs. Moskowitz, who reflected very much his general point of view, was very sure he was going to be elected. I remember saying to her, though not to him because you don't like to discourage the candidate, “You know, some parts of this country are terrible. I don't know whether we've really got them or not. In the places I've been the feeling was so deep-seated that I'm alarmed that we're not going to get them.”

She said, “You're absolutely wrong, Frances. You're absolutely wrong! It's all right. We have intimate reports that we're all right. The Governor feels absolutely sure.”

That was the spirit the day before and on the morning of election day.

The State Democratic headquarters were over in the Commodore Hotel. There were always several headquarters
