extras, where two would have done perfectly well. That would have been all that was necessary for a person who knew how many people were needed.

It was that kind of thing that got put over. The servants just nearly died when the Smiths left. The crying that went on the last week was just terrible. The old butler didn't think he could stand it. There was a wringing of hands. Some of them began to grow old and it hurt them terribly to be separated. The servants all became interested in politics in the last year or two. From the time the Smiths began to really dawn on them they were concerned about politics. Whereas, up until that time they had been proper civil servants completely uninterested in politics. A Governor is a Governor and he's properly served. They began to be very interested in politics and very ardent Democrats, taking time off to go and get a few votes in the evening, and to explain to the servants who worked in someone else's house why they should vote Democratic.
