I don't remember just how soon I saw Roosevelt after he got back. I know that he went to Warm Springs for a brief time. I know that he asked me before inauguration and at Hyde Park. We were driving in an automobile around the place. I don't know who was driving us, but somebody was. We weren't on the road, but on the back road over to Moses Smith's farm or some such place as that. He'd asked me to come up. I knew that he wanted to talk over the Labor Department project and problem. Al Smith had told me that he had recommended to Roosevelt that he continue me in the Industrial Commission, and I supposed that he wanted to tell me that he wanted to continue me. I was certainly glad to say okay to that.

I remember this, because he mentioned it afterwards three or four times to other people. I said to him on this occasion, “Now, see here, I think you may be making a mistake. I'm very much flattered by being offered the Industrial Commissionership. Naturally I'm very pleased, very flattered and very grateful to you for thinking of me.
