committee with R. Fulton Cutting, Arthur Williams, who was with the Edison company, and Morgenthau and others. He had the scientific mind, the engineer's mind. He was interested in the possibilities of making these buildings properly equipped for any kind of problem - occupancy, fire hazard. He saw the point of it. That's an engineer's problem.

He was very good. I don't mean to say that he served with great ardor on the committee or was always present, but he was there occasionally. I think his name remained on the letterheads for several years. He seemed a very promising fellow at that time - a very promising person.

I don't know whether he later turned out not to be promising or not. I know that many people who thought extremely well of him are now greatly disappointed in him. At least now they say they've been disappointed in him. I don't know why. I don't know what happened to him to frustrate him. At that time he certainly was a very promising person. Many people had a grudge against him. Even then it was obvious that some people didn't like him at all.

Daisy (Mrs. J. Borden) Harriman was out at the convention. She was a great friend of McAdoo's and a great believer in McAdoo.

I'm now confused as to whether Norman Davis was around. He must have been around, but he wasn't a candidate until the
