had accepted it, to regard Al Smith as being just one of those remarkable accidents that spring up in Tammany; that this really good man who was able to be a good Governor had sprung out of Tammany Hall. That was one of those remarkable accidents. I remember hearing Roosevelt tell people later on, “You know Murphy always made it a point to keep Al honest. He never let Al Smith get smeared or tangled up with any of the dirty deals. He took great pains that they should never involve Al in any of these things, because he thought he was a capable fellow and he could go far.” I've heard Roosevelt say that. I know that was true. It had been told me by Jim Foley who was Murphy's son-in-law and who knew Murphy's mind very well. I'm almost sure that Al Smith told me that himself once. Certainly one or two of his old friends like Johnny Gilchrist told me that Murphy always said, “Don't put Al's name on the list of people that do this. You boys be careful. Don't you involve him in any way. He's got to be straight.” No matter what the others were up to orders were “hands off Al.”
I knew Mrs. Franklin Roosevelt only socially at the time. She was very pleasing, quite shy and serious - very serious.
