We didn't have any employers to deal with. The biggest group we had were the people who made Worcester Salt. They were awfully good people really. A good deal of salt was made at Solvay by the evaporation process. That was a by-product. The principal product was sodium bicarbonate, but they also had an evaporation process by which they made salt. The name Solvay comes from Belgium. It was the Solvay process, which is a Belgian process. There had always been a great salt spring and salt lick and salt marsh there. There are a number of place names around there that have salt in them. It was well-known in the days of the Indians and early settlers that there was salt there.
The Worcester Salt people had been mining salt just beyond there. They had found great salt deposits underground.
The most problematical salt mine that we saw was somewhere near Lake Elmira. I can remember going there myself because I could hardly believe the stories that I was told. It was absolutely impossible, according to the employers, to make two means of exit in that case. We'd have to find something else because the gallery ran way down hundreds of feet under Lake Elmira. So indeed it did.
