can stand for six hours in that stairway and the fire can burn merrily on the other side, but you'll be safe.”
He wouldn't go out there. “They're the darndest Republicans there are in this town.” He wouldn't go near their factory. But he had integrity of a sort. He didn't see the point of this social legislation. He just didn't believe there'd be any fire. He couldn't believe that the Triangle Fire could be repeated upstate. Their buildings weren't the same as the Triangle was. Only two or three people would get killed. That was just the point. They didn't believe there could be a hazard and they weren't prepared to support the enforcement against that hazard.
I don't say they were finally all converted. I wouldn't think of saying anything so drastic as that, but I think it was worthwhile to take the pains to educate them. I also found so many awfully good, intelligent, modern-minded employers in the State of New York. I always had a group to cooperate with who wanted to do things right and who were often doing them very right indeed before we ever caught up with them, by virtue of consultation with their own insurance companies - their own fire insurance, their own workmen's compensation insurance companies - or their own engineers who were in their employ. They had it as a kind of a basic policy - run this factory right, make people comfortable and safe.
