club for the express purpose of pulling in these youngsters. It was while she was doing that that her brother, whom she always referred to as “my kid brother,” came East, looking for a job. Adah was looking for a job for him. He was just out of college. He wanted a job in New York. He was like so many other young men - not very sure what he wanted - but Adah was there and Adah's field of knowledge was in social work.
She got him a job rather easily somewhere. I don't quite remember what his first job was, but he was all right. I almost think that his first job was in the Joint Application Bureau. There had been established before I ever got to New York - it was a going concern when I got there - on the first floor of the Charities building, which I think is still called the Charities building at 22nd Street and 4th Avenue where nearly all the charities had their headquarters; the Joint Application Bureau, as it was called. It was kept on a day and night, seven days a week, service. It was where persons in distress might apply at any hour of the day or night and have some kind of a solution of their problem undertaken or initiated right away. It was a very useful, and at the time a very essential, technique.
