guaranteed work week to your employees. Then you don't have any unemployment.
Examples of this sort came to us. There were a great many others that came in that I don't recall at the moment. A great many other methods of preventing unemployment came in to us which had been tried out by somebody and found reasonably useful. There was a whole session of the American Political Science Association in about 1930 or '31 that was devoted to this subject. I spoke at the meeting on that occasion and I remember that that was the principle burden of it. They discussed the methods by which industry can prevent unemployment in its own industry.
Even in the clothing industry there had been efforts made at our suggestion to educate parts of the industry. Max Meyer of White Plains was on the committee. He was a high style clothing manufacturer and a charming person, who had by this time, I think, retired, but was an adviser to many aspects of the clothing industry. He was our closest entre into the clothing industries. The clothing industries always maintained that they had a preposterous amount of unemployment. In the best of years they have a great deal of unemployment because it's what they call a seasonal trade. It's dependent upon fashion. Fashion doesn't materialize early enough in a season so that they dare manufacture ahead of time. Paris
