shows may show short skirts when they've made all theirs long. They don't dare manufacture ahead. They always claim that the seasonal character of their industry - the fact that there are spring, fall, summer and winter styles and peaks of buying - confuses the industry and also that fashion and its unexpected changes enter in. They cannot plan their industry ahead. They can't make any guarantee of work. Unemployment is bound to occur.

We made an analysis of the various aspects of the clothing industry. Meyer didn't know much about the men's clothing industry, but he had acquaintances there. He suggested that I have a study made of certain men's clothing industries in Rochester where they were located - Hickey-Freeman, Hart, Sohaffner & Marx, and others. I think it was at Hickey-Freeman that we made a thorough study. I remember saying, “It can't be possible that men's clothing changes style that much.” I was greated with horror by the experts in the field. All the people in the men's clothing industry just shouted at me that there were terrific changes in style of men's clothing. It had always looked alike to me, but it seems that the style changes as to the shape and width of the revers on a coat - they point up, they point down, the collar is long and the revers are low or the collar is short and the
