I think I went to England first. I think I went over in time to spend about three weeks in England in this unemployment job. Then I went to the conference in Amsterdam. I know I sailed from a French port. I had my daughter with me and I guess I took her to Paris for a week. When we left Amsterdam, we got off the train, parked our baggage in Haarlem and went to see the Frans Hals paintings. We spent three or four hours there and then took a later train to Paris. I remember my daughter's interest and delight that right from the railroad station platform from the most clean, lovely booths you could get coffee or cocoa. It was right on the platform. You didn't have to go into a dirty dining room. I think I probably took her to Paris for a week and then we came home.
Almost nothing happened at the conference, although an elaborate report was written. I think nothing but the standard recommendations were made. From that time on I felt queer about Mary van Kleeck. I also blamed myself for feeling queer about her. I didn't like the way she had behaved at that conference and I couldn't say why. She seemed to me too gushy over these three Russians who wouldn't talk to her any more than they would talk to the rest of us. She was always going around saying, “‘So-and-So' is going to have a dinner and these three Russians are coming. I
