I said, “I'm sure she wouldn't.”

We left it that way. I went to see Mrs. Moskowitz in the next day or two. We talked about this and that. We wondered who the Governor would appoint to this, who the Governor would appoint to that. I said, “I wonder who he'll appoint as secretary. I suppose he's got to name somebody from the political circles, because that's where he needs a good front man who knows all the politicians, how to deal with them, and how to take them off his neck.”

“Not at all,” she said, “he doesn't need that. You can hire a clerk to do that. A receptionist can do that. He needs a secretary who will really do some work and see that great issues and great problems are properly presented.”

I said, “Well, I suppose that would be a help.” I remember saying to her, “Well, I wonder who there is who would be able to do that, because you know he doesn't like Moses. He's got that kind of ability, but he won't have Moses around.”

She said, “That's a great mistake, but everybody has his own prejudices.”

I said, “Who is there?”

She said, “I'll tell you something if you won't tell it. Governor Al has suggested to him that he appoint me.”
