I said, “Really! But you wouldn't do it, Belle. You wouldn't think of doing that, would you? My heavens, you've given so many years to Albany, to Governor Smith. How could you do it? You wouldn't do it.”
She said, “I don't know. I think I could be very useful.”
I said, “I'm sure you could, but that's some thing I hadn't ever thought of.”
We went on to talk about other things. Then I went back and told the Governor that Mrs. Moskowitz was willing. He still didn't say what he had decided. He hated to come to grips with it. Within the next twenty-four hours Al Smith called me up in New York and said, “Commissioner, I'd like to have a talk with you. I want to see you.”
I went over to see him.
He said, “What're you doing on your job?”
I told him.
“What're you doing about the industrial diseases?” and so forth, showing his continued interest in the things that we had undertaken to develop in the Department of Labor. He said, “How are you getting on with the new Governor?” and all that kind of thing. He led up to the subject, saying, “How's he going to do?”
I said, “It looks to me as though he's going to be fine.”
