“They say that you did thus and so. They say that your employees have been told to hound them and that they're shaking them down for money, that you know all this, that they're making charges against you personally.”
It was very hard to keep my mouth shut, not fly into a fit and say, “How can you say such things? How ridiculous and what a lie!” I didn't know what they were talking about. It was true that they had made charges against certain State Fund employees before I went away. We had decided that there was nothing to it, but were having a full investigation made.
At any rate I came ashore without saying anything. I read the article in the New York Times, which was that the window cleaners charged that I knew all about this, that I had permitted the shakedown of the window cleaners and their association. They named the people in the State Fund and implied that I must have my cut in the thing. That was the implication. A most reprehensible man was the head of the window cleaners' association. He was just a racketeer himself. I think it was a holiday that I landed on, maybe Labor Day, because I have a feeling that it was a day when nobody was working. I'm not sure about that though.
Anyhow I went home immediately and read the article.
