Part:         Session:         Page of 654

I called the office and the State Fund people and got briefed up as to what had happened before this blast came out. I found that our investigation showed that there had been two people in the State Fund who had shaken down the window cleaners. One of them was an insurance investigator and the other was a doctor. It was very shattering to know that, but at least we had discovered in the course of our investigation that there was nothing else. The report wasn't completed and it was just being prepared. It was the first thing on their agenda to take up with me on my return.

I called the Governor at once and asked him if he'd seen it. He said yes, he had. The paper also said I was returning from Europe that day and he thought I'd probably know how to deal with it. I said, “What do you think? Is it going to be serious?”

He said, “No, not unless you make it so.”

I said, “What shall I do?”

He said, “Is it true?”

I said, “Yes, unfortunately, it is true that they have discovered at least two people in the State Fund that have been up to some chicanery. Of course it's simple enough to fire them immediately and we will do so. They have not been able to discover anybody else. They haven't discovered any higher officer involved.”
