He said, “In that case I guess you'd better write that section of the report to me. Put it in a telegram to me and send it to me, or send it by special delivery so I'll have it. Let me be the one to say that there are two people and they have been fired. You fire them today. I think that's the best thing to do.”

I said, “But we may find more. Actually they ought to make a further investigation.”

He said, “All right, let's take the first two we find and say no more about it. Go on and make your investigation. You're perfectly sure of Smith and the other man?”

I said, “I am.”

It was his advice to move in that direction. He said, “They'll keep after you. You'll be in trouble. They'll hound you.”

I suddenly had a hunch and said, “How do you think it would be for me to call together my advisory committee, which we don't very often call?”

He said, “Fine. Let them defend you so you don't have to defend yourself.”

I said, “Perhaps they won't, but at least it's a good shot to try.”

This was an advisory committee made up of employers and representatives of the trade unions. It was appointed
