long corridor that goes off to the left of the Governor's reception office. I know that when I wanted to see him I went down there. I remember some conversations and analyses of his, which mostly had to do not with the politics of the moment, but with the government policies of the state. I would be seeing him with regard to legislation that I wanted, with regard to amendments, with regard to appointments that I wanted to make, with regard to certain problems of handling the members of the Senate and the Assembly, presenting certain facts to them, with regard to problems of having certain matters analyzed and presented to the Governor. That's what I chiefly remember Sam Rosenman as doing - that is, working at what was technically his job. He was accessible to me and to all other public officials, I suppose, for this kind of work.

Louis Howe was very much in the background and much more personal with Roosevelt. I remember seeing him at the mansion rather than at the office building.

Of course, Missy LeHand and Grace Tully were around and you saw a great deal of them. They were ever-present. You were always getting them to help you out with this, that and the other thing.

There were a great many people in and out of the Executive Mansion all of the time. It was like a constant
