by some of us too. If he was going to be President, we wanted him to do the same thing. He was turned down because of certain personal unavailabilities.
There was also this conference on unemployment that I operated, which was in '31. I knew that that had great political implications. I was very alert to see that the action of the Governor with regard to that conference, that the Governor's remarks at the beginning and ending of that conference, and the Governor's part in it was made public all over the United States. Jim saw that it had widespread publicity. I saw that it was well written up and well covered. I thought that it was an illustration of what could be expected of him as President and of the direction in which he would move. That was what we used in arguments later on after he was nominated. In the campaign speeches we said, “This is the kind of a man he is. This is the kind of a President he will be.” In the speeches we wrote for him in the campaign we played all those things up.
I had a big job at that time and was interested in it. There was the crisis of unemployment and a very interesting and difficult administrative job. It was a job full of hazard. You had to watch it like a hawk. Both in workmen's compensation and in factory and labor law enforcement there
