him to be familiar with what the Labor Department was doing, knowing that he would be interested. I didn't think there was any chance of a comeback for Smith as a Presidential candidate, but I thought there was a great chance for a comeback for him as Governor. I took it for granted that Franklin Roosevelt would not want to go on being Governor forever. Two two-year terms were regarded as natural and as really necessary, but after the two terms, even before I was aware that somebody had his eye on the Presidency, I was aware that Governors become Senators some time. Whereas I would have probably said that Roosevelt would go on being Governor for three terms - if he wanted to, he certainly could have - I thought it might very well be a natural that Smith would come back as Governor of New York for quite a long term.
Smith loved the State of New York. I knew he did. He loved it with a passion that I understand, because I have some such feeling. The State of New York still seems to me more important than any other part of the United States and is kind of an entity. It's like the fact that you love one ship better than you love another ship. Each is an entity. There was, say, the Betsy Ann, the best ship that ever sailed. There was never a ship like her. You don't know why, but your whole family loves the Betsy Ann,
