descendant from old Noyes who was a giant physical type. His progeny are nearly all very tall.
Al became very interested in this Oneida Community, both in its history and in the area there, which is now called Kenmore, which is a model community. Oneida is a part of Kenmore. Kenmore is the post office.
Philosophically speaking, Al would say, of the people who made the Oneida silverware, “They're good people. They've got a heart.” He would say the same of Mr. Edmund Huyck who made Kenwood blankets. Al's philosophy about that was just this: It was good and right to do the right thing by your employees. It was good and right to be in favor of laws that would make employers who weren't as good as you were do certain minimum things for the welfare of their employees. That was good. It was a moral question with him.
I don't think that Al had ever read and pondered on the Rerum novarum of 1891. The encyclical on the Rerum novarum was the first time that the Roman church had dealt in a theological manner with the problems raised by modern labor, industrial organization, and the apparent conflict of rights and obligations between the parties to it and between industry and society in general. I don't think Al had read it. As a matter of fact, hardly anybody read it. It did not begin to be a popular document, even among the
