He got himself involved in a social whirl with a different type of “idle rich” than he had known before. But I don't think that affected him. His balance was still firm. He was honest in himself and intelligent about politics. When he got into the Liberty League, I think he was not being honest with himself. I think when he was determined to run in '32, he was being true to himself, although somewhat over-persuaded by the people with whom he consulted who were bitter about Roosevelt, didn't like the idea of Roosevelt's aspiring to be nominated and thought they could stop it.
I think he was persuaded in '32 to run by a good many people, and the friends of a good many people, who thought that they could make it themselves. William Gibbs McAdoo, I'm sure, although he had no direct contact with Smith, because they were not friends, had people who were anxious to promote his candidacy making overtures to Smith on the theory that if Smith created enough confusion in the convention, there might be something for McAdoo.
There was a very strong movement for Newton Baker. I don't think we realize at this date (1952) how strong that movement was and how many people were in it. It was strong in terms of influence, rather than numbers. The best of the Woodrow Wilson outfit were for Newton Baker. A great many respectable, high-type individuals were for him. Newton
