Moses really was awfully good. He was a very fine administrator and did very fine things in the Smith administration. Smith also wanted Roosevelt to continue Moses.

During the campaign Moses had said some things which had reached Roosevelt and which were very derogatory to Roosevelt. They were probably more by way of comparing him to Al Smith. They hadn't been a sober kind of thing, but had been left-handed slaps for which Moses is famous. He's very capable of making a person appear as a kind of a clown who doesn't know much without saying it so that you can put your finger on it and say, “That's a lie.” It's just an attitude that he has. He didn't think much of Frank Roosevelt. I know he thought that he was a pretty poor excuse of a man. He said so to me in just those words - “He's a pretty poor excuse of a man. Pity to have to have him and that Al has set his heart on him. It's undoubtedly a good name to carry the ticket with, however,” He thought of Roosevelt only as probably adding strength to Al Smith in New York State where they needed Protestant, non-Tammany Hall support in order to pull him through New York State.
