That kind of thing had reached Roosevelt. It's therefore quite explicable to me that he didn't want Moses in the most intimate relationships in his government. I think he almost immediately said, “No, I wouldn't want Moses, because he doesn't agree with me and I don't agree with him.” I think that was almost immediate.
Of course, Smith didn't like Flynn because Flynn was a leader of the Bronx and wasn't a Hall man. Flynn had been giving himself airs - considerable airs - in recent years about being very much better than thou. I saw him do that. Eddie Flynn was giving himself the airs of an educated man. He leaned back and spoke in a scholarly way about certain problems of political life, government and activity. He spoke in a scholarly way, but, I hate to add, with a strong Bronx accent. The words sounded scholarly. They sounded out of a book on the subject. He gave himself great airs.
When you pressed him for his education, it wasn't Harvard. I seem to think it wasn't anything but Fordham. That was all right. Nobody would dispute him that Fordham is just as good a place to get educated as Harvard College, or any other, provided you are of the type and temperament that can get education.
