If we put him in here, he's got to work. He's got to make himself a good mayor and he's got to show himself smart. We'll all help him, but he's got to be there and do it.” I know that Al Smith labored with him. He impressed it on him that he had to work.

Walker made a very attractive campaign. The First World War was over. We had had a slight depression and that was improving. We were just on the beginnings of the big boom. Jimmy Walker coincided with the big economic boom. He had nothing to do with it. He just coincided with it. He was a man built for that day. Everybody was having a good time. Everybody was enjoying himself. Everybody was thinking he was richer and richer. Everybody was spending money. For the first time the strange, puritanical American attitude relaxed. We began to import a lot of plays from Europe. We began to import a lot of luxurious habits. While there had been plenty of luxury in select and exclusive circles, it hadn't been the common possession of all the people. All the people suddenly stopped being puritanical Baptists or Methodists and started out having a good time, at least
