around New York. A lot of people moved in from other parts of the country to enjoy the fun, make more money, deal on the stock market, go up with the bubble. Everybody seemed to have an awful lot of money. Everybody was gay. Everybody in New York was opposed to Prohibition, and nobody more so than Jimmy Walker, our mayor.

He just coincided in everything with what was then the drift of the people. It was a period of great gaiety and great fun. Everybody was having a good time.

There was considerable building at that time also. The borough president at that time was the first one to advertise by putting his name up, saying this playground, building or school was built “by the Borough President of Manhattan for the benefit of the people of New York, James J. Walker, Mayor.” Jimmy had quite an advertising sense. Now everybody does it.

Hylan brought in Grover Whalen. People don't remember that Grover Whalen came in with Hylan. I never have known why either. “Red Mike” was very much without polish and very awkward in many ways, a very naive and ignorant man. At the time he came in to be mayor we were still running this Confederation of Women's Organizations for War Service and I was the executive secretary of it. The war wasn't over,
