anxious to see that. It's one of the great industries of Belgium. It's an industry in which there are the largest possible number of health hazards. In our work in the prevention of industrial diseases in this country I looked into many, many glass factories of all kinds and all degrees. I'm familiar with the various types of hazards that there are and with the means that have been taken for the prevention of industrial illness. I was anxious to see the two great crystal works in Belgium. We chose to go to this one because it was more convenient.

It also is in a part of the country that's very interesting because it's where the coal deposits are. One of the reasons for locating it there was because soft coal was available for the furnaces. You have to get a high degree of heat for the furnaces.

Anyhow, I went to see this factory. I was a stranger. In New York or anywhere else in this country I had a right to go and ask to see any factory. I had no right to see any factory in Belgium. It's a privilege. I'm a stranger. I'm from a foreign country. To be sure I had the rank of minister, but it was courteous to go and call on the mayor before I go to inspect the industries, or the housing operations of his town. You feel much better if the mayor has received you and has told you you are welcome, invited you to come again and
