country as I did in Al Smith's campaign, but that probably was because it was a novelty to me when I went on Al Smith's campaign. I had never done it before. It was a fresh, new experience which was very exciting and impressive to me.

I did some traveling in the '32 campaign. I made some speeches outside of the State of New York. I know that I made one big speech in Chicago. It was on that occasion that I met Augusta Goodwin, as she is now called. There's nothing important about having met Augusta Goodwin on that particular occasion, but I remember the place by the appearance of this vivid, red-haired woman who was all gush, and who, whenever I've met her since, which has been many times, has recalled to me our first meeting at a campaign meeting, at which I spoke. So I know I was there in Chicago.

There was a great big meeting in Chicago. I think I made two or three speeches there, because one of them was a noon-day meeting. Then there was another evening meeting. The particular occasion on which I met Augusta was a noon-day meeting. The committee had made a great effort at this meeting. It was in a downtown Loop theatre. They had made a great effort to have it at the hour when people went to lunch in order to catch the people who worked downtown and couldn't go to meetings ordinarily.
