I've accepted the agony of having my picture taken and published, and pieces, either favorable or unfavorable - it doesn't seem to matter which in my reaction against them - printed about me in the public press. I've accepted that as a discipline which has increased the virtue of humility, which I strive to acquire as well as I can, as do, I suppose, all other human beings. I knew that inevitably there would be an awful lot of limelight and publicity.
Many of the things which, after I got to Washington, proved to be difficult and proved to be stumbling blocks I never thought of. They never crossed my mind. I didn't dread any relationship with Congress. I thought that would be very pleasant. I thought of Congressmen as being good and valued citizens elected by the people of their states, all working together for the welfare of the United States. It didn't occur to me that there would be any sparring. I never had seensparring. In the State of New York there's no sparring between the executive and the legislative branch. The sparring is between the Democratic party and the Republican party. They spar. That's all right. That you understand. If the Finance Committee of the Legislature has got to pass an appropriations bill, they sit down and cooperate with the Director of the Budget, the Governor and the heads of the administration to know what it is they've
