got to pass. If they're Republicans and the administration is Democratic, they may think that some of these things are all nonsense and they'll tell the Governor. They tell him that the program oughtn't to be done and they're not going to appropriate the money for it. But it isn't sparring to degrade the executive. You can go to them and explain anything in complete assurance that they won't misrepresent you, or even misunderstand you. You can tell a Republican member of the Legislature the whole truth about anything if it's in the committee in which he has responsibilities.
So it never occurred to me that there was going to be any sparring. I thought one of the great pleasures and one of the great educational things in my life would be to get to know the members of Congress more intimately and better. That was one of the good points in my mind.
I realized, of course, that as a woman I would have an exceptionally conspicuous post, which I dreaded, and that everything that I did, said or put on my back would be the subject of comment. I had been around a good deal and I knew that any woman is always the butt of a joke. I had learned that in the State of New York. If a woman walks into a room and then walks out again, that's a joke. You can make a joke on that. Women don't mind that very much because they have so much else on the ball that they aren't
