attracted my attention. The name is West Country English. His family were descended from West Country English. The name also occurs in Wales occasionally.

Then Roosevelt said to me, “I guess you know what I want you for. You've been reading the papers, haven't you?” I said I had. He said, “Did Molly Dewson tell you what I have in mind?”

I said, “Well, I never know if Molly is speaking the truth, or just reflecting her own hopes and aspirations.”

We just joked a little back and forth. This was all meant to be light. He said, “I really mean it, Frances. I think you'd be a good Secretary of Labor and I'd like you to come along and be Secretary of Labor. Molly must have told you. She's spoken to me about it. We had discussed it before she spoke to you.”

Then I began to discuss it seriously. Of course, I made the usual courteous remarks about how honored and surprised I was. He said, “Oh come on now, don't say surprised. You're no fool. What did you think I wanted to see you for when McIntyre telephoned you to come up today?”

I said, “I thought you might just want to say goodbye to me.”

He was by way of joshing me at pretending that I didn't know what he was talking about, or that I was surprised that
