before. You know that, don't you?”
“That's all right,” he said, “we promised them we'd do something. So we can do it.”
I said, “Are you sure that you want this done, because you won't want me for Secretary of Labor if you don't want those things done? I'd be an embarrassment to you, because when I start on a thing, I round up the cohorts. I get out advisory committees who really become supporters of the idea. You get a public demand for it the next thing you know. You wouldn't want me if you didn't want that done.”
He said, “Yes, I think that's all right. I'll back you. Is it all right?”
I realized that somebody else must be waiting and that he wanted to bring the interview to a close. He wanted me to say that it was all right. I said, “I guess it is all right, but I've just got one thing to ask. You've got to give me a delay. My husband is ill, as you know. I must consult him. I cannot let him read in the paper that I have been appointed to something and have accepted something he doesn't know about. You understand that?”
“Sure, sure,” he said, “can't you go out and see him tomorrow?”
I said, “Yes.”
“All right. Let me know tomorrow night.”
