Herbert Lehman, who was coming on the scene at this time, came from Lillian Wald and Lehman Brothers. Herbert Lehman was born in Georgia and was one of the few rich Jews in New York who was born in the South and had some real roots in the South. I think it was Grandpere Lehman, not father, who had emigrated rather early and settled in Georgia or Alabama. They were two generations here, at least. I don't know what grandfather had done for a living, whether he had been in trade, or what, but anyhow he had done well in the South. They were brought up in the South in good society with good incomes. Sometime in the course of their education Irving and Herbert had gravitated to New York. Lehman Brothers was a big banking institution and there were at least three or four brothers in it before they got out of it.

Brother Arthur Lehman was the real business man. He was the one who stuck to the firm and did the business. People used to say cynically, “He makes the money for the others to waste in civic virtue.” That was an embittered note that
