chairman for it, but that was over. That had been finished. He had done that and that work was completed.
Almost immediately there began to be a fear of Mrs. Moskowitz on the Roosevelt side - between Roosevelt and Howe primarily, and I think Fred Greene shared it. Fred Greene was Commissioner of Highways and was rather close to Roosevelt. How close Flynn was in this matter I honestly don't know. One didn't see much of him, because the duties of Secretary of State are almost nil. He has to issue certain papers and things like that, but they're not very heavy and don't require him to be around too much.
There was a fear of Mrs. Moskowitz more than of Al. If any suggestion was made, they said, “What's Moskowitz going to get out of this? What's Moskowitz up to now? What's Moskowitz trying to bring about?” She did work in certain sly ways, making suggestions to people who would bring them to the Governor's attention indirectly. I saw that very early, because she would make suggestions to me. We were friends so she could. I remember saying to her once, “I think this is a fine suggestion, Belle. I like it, but if you don't mind I'm going to tell the Governor that it's your suggestion. I think he ought to know it's yours.”
“Oh, don't do that,” she said. “It will just antagonize him against it.”
