“Are you going to stay on in Washington?”

I said, “Oh yes, I'm going to stay.”

“I thought perhaps you'd go back to New York.”

I said, “No, the President wants me to stay and I'm going to stay right here. I shan't go back to New York at all. I'll send for my trunks and stay right here. I'll spend the afternoon in the office. I'll come in tomorrow morning early. It's been most kind of you to introduce the people. By the way, is there a car, automobile, or any other conveyance at the disposal of the Secretary?”

He said, “As a matter of fact, there is. There's a limousine that calls for the Secretary. Then there are a couple of small cars that are used. There's a light truck to carry things around to the post office and so forth.”

I said, “That's quite a fleet. That must be very convenient for you. If you're going out to lunch, won't you take the car and chauffeur as you've been accustomed to? Would you be kind enough to tell the chauffeur to come directly back here once he has left you at your home after lunch? If he'll come directly back to the office I'll give him his further orders.”

I had to say it as plain as that. He got the idea. Mr. White was in the room. He turned and looked out the
