myself, “I wonder how I'm going to get Mr. Doak out of here. After all, I must take over. I don't want to throw him out, but I have a duty to the President and have a duty to the people of the United States. I've been regularly appointed, confirmed and sworn in. I just must not be delicate about this.”

So I said to Mr. Doak, “I presume you have a luncheon engagement. I should like you to come to my hotel and lunch with me if you haven't.”

He said that well - yes - as a matter of fact - he had a luncheon engagement. I said that I was sorry and perhaps we could lunch some other day. I said, “I hope you will come in to see me often. I presume that you have a few articles here in the office that you would like to take with you. Is this Negro man in the outer office the person you call on to pack those?”

He said, “Well, I suppose so.”

I said, “Well, perhaps it would be a good idea to get him to pack them right now while you're out at lunch. I don't lunch, you see, so I'll just stay right here. If it's all right with you, I'll just tell Callus to pack your things right now.”

He looked as though he were going to drop dead. I don't know what he thought I was going to do. He said,
