I said, “Is that in good condition?”
He said, “I wouldn't know. I wouldn't have any way of knowing.”
I said, “Don't you use it sometimes?”
“No ma'am. I've never been permitted to sit in it.”
I saw right away that he was full of gripes. He hadn't been politely treated by Mr. Doak and he didn't feel very warmly toward him, although he was his Assistant Secretary of Labor.
I said, “I suppose I'll take that over.”
He said, “Take it over if you can.”
I said, “What do you mean, Mr. White?”
“Well, “he said, “he's got a very funny chauffeur. You'll have to find out about that from somebody else. You'll have to find that out in your own way. He's a very peculiar man, but you'll find out.”
The whole thing began to seem very sinister to me. I said, “Mr. White, you haven't had your lunch, so you'd better go and have your lunch now. I'll dictate a little while to the stenographer. Perhaps you'll make an appointment to go over a lot of things in detail with me tomorrow. I want to see every office. Will you take me around from office to office
