and sat in the box, which is much more proper and dignified. I've always known that at a formal ball the dancing was started by the sponsors or the patrons, or the hostess, or the most distinguished guest. It isn't much of a project and it doesn't have to be carried on long.
I stayed at the ball until quite near the end. I told Mr. White that I would be in in the morning and would see him. Quantities of people came up and talked to me while I was there. I circulated. I didn't wait for them to come up and talk to me. I'm pretty sure that Miss Jay came that night too and so I said to her, “You go around and tell people to come and speak to me. I'll circulate too.” I just went around from box to box and on the outskirts of the floor. I spoke to people. I made a point of getting acquainted with them. I would say, “who are you and where do you work?”
“Well, I'm Mary Jones, but I don't work in the department. I just came with Sam Smith.” That was all right. They had a right to bring their best girl or any lady or gentleman guest. Anyway, I went around like that.
It was, on the whole, very pleasant. I got acquainted with a number of awfully nice people who were obviously nice people. They wouldn't have come to your eye in the ordinary official intercourse because they weren't high enough up in the scale of things to have gotten acquainted with them right
