away. It was very nice. I liked it.
Later on we used to make the annual ball of the Department of Labor quite an affair. We gave it some style by the next year and the year after. I did it deliberately.
By this time I'm sure I had sent my daughter back to New York. I began to look for a place to live. I didn't want to stay on at the Willard Hotel. I think by the second or third day I had heard of the Woman's University Club. In fact, I had been taken there to lunch once or twice while I had visited Washington. It was the only club I had heard of and the only place to stay I had ever heard of, except a hotel. I called up the Visitation Convent to know if they would take me.
Among my prevision of what life would be like in Washington I had had a prevision that it was going to be very hard for me on the combination social and official side. In the first place, I had no gentlemen with me to go out with me, to be an escort, to take me out. I would have to go out to official or private social events by myself, which was all right. I had done that in New York. I began to realize that that probably would be very heavy and that my work would be very hard and very confining.
