He was, of course, a man of very good reputation. He had done some fine negotiating out at the international conference at Constantinople. I was prepared to respect him and to regard him as a pacifist. That was the way he had been painted in the public press, I don't recall any very vigorous statements that he made.
I recall that Jim Parley was talking much more about the political organization and about the leaders on the Hill. He had been seeing the leaders. He wanted the President to make an arrangement to see the leaders very soon, not just the top leaders, but the heads of committees and such. He wanted to be sure that all that went well. He said, “We've got some fine people here. We've really got some first-class people in Congress.” It was that semi-political talk.
I can't remember what Ickes said. I can't remember What Roper said. I can't remember what Wallace said. Each of them said something that was inconsequential, appropriate to their excitement, but certainly not exciting or definitive.
It got to me and I began to realize that this was coming. I hadn't know how it would be. Nobody told me that this was the way they did things. I thought about what I would say while the others were speaking.
