“That's interesting. The Secretary of War is an ally.” I'm not sure that I didn't write his name down on my little pad to remind myself that Dern was an ally in this matter. At any rate, I cultivated him assiduously from that time on, recognizing that he was concerned about these people, as the Governor of a state would be.
When Swanson's turn came, I remember thinking that he was kind of an old-fashioned person. He probably made some jokes. That was his general line. I remember that he did this for the first time, and thereafter he did it always. As soon as he had made his little statement to the President, he opened his coat, pulled out of his coat a cigar, handed it to John Garner and said, “Here's one for the, Jack.” Jack thanked him and then he looked around to see if anybody else wanted a cigar. Nobody else did. It was his standard gesture. He always gave Jack Garner a cigar at every Cabinet meeting. Somebody told me afterwards that it was a very fine cigar that he had made to order. They were quite long, but very slender. I don't remember much else about him, except that he was picturesque. He had long mustachios and a great head of hair that wasn't cut too well. It was a little too long. I think he cultivated it that way. He had not wear a flowing bow tie like a Kentucky colonel, but he might have. The cut of his head was like that.
